Commitment to Safety
At
Sioux Falls Tower and Communications we are committed to the safety of our employees and
to improving the safety of our Industry as a whole. We have a comprehensive written Safety
Plan developed in house and designed to help us improve our safety performance.
Complete investigation of any accident or near miss helps us to find
potential problems, or correct situations that may pose a hazard to our employees.
Continual training helps keep everyone up to date on the latest techniques and equipment
available to facilitate our efforts. Our Director of Safety, Todd Thorin, the former
chairman of the Safety and Education Committee for the National Association of Tower
Erectors.
TRAINING TOWER
Our on-site Training Tower makes it very easy to train new-hires and to perform yearly
re-certifications at our facility. We test and practice fall-protection and rescue
techniques and equipment year round.
We can also train and practice other procedures such as plumb and
tension, rigging and antenna and line installation. The tower also gives us a great
platform to demonstrate our patriotic sentiments, and has become a famous landmark in the
area.

SAFETY INCENTIVES AND PENALTIES
We have a series of employee safety awards that progress with increased positive safety
performance. We also have penalties that are exacted for non-compliance. We are proud to
say that because of the safe practices of our crews not many penalties are given out and
our experience mod rating is one of the lowest anywhere, well below 1.0.
Performance in the field is monitored by surprise visits and
unannounced observation of work in progress. It has become a challenge for the crews to
spot the Safety Director before he spots them! The practice has paid off as OSHA employs
the same tactics, and our crews have experienced surprise OSHA inspections with a clean
bill of safety health.
